Supervisors forward resolution to form LGBTQ Nightlife and Cultural Working Group

Supervisor Scott Wiener moved and the committee voted to forward a resolution to the full Board urging the creation of an LGBTQ Nightlife and Cultural Working Group, aiming to "protect, preserve, and expand LGBTQ nightlife." Wiener said the resolution responds to a prior hearing and the need for a working group to advance a stalled cultural heritage district effort in South of Market.
The resolution asks the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the Entertainment Commission to convene the working group. Speaking in support, Terrence Allen, a longtime South of Market resident, described the personal and community history at local venues and urged more than commemorative plaques: "I met my first husband in front of the stud in 1981, January 21," Allen said, adding that city resources should be put behind preserving those stories.
Angelica Kabande, representing ongoing neighborhood cultural planning, recommended an inclusive process and urged that the city avoid reallocating SoMa resources without community input. "We have been working a lot on making this strategic plan to present to you by the end of the month," she said, and asked that Filipino history and other neighborhood interests not be displaced.
Supervisor Campos emphasized geographic and demographic diversity for the working group and noted the need to include representatives from communities of color and from venues that have already closed. Wiener said the working group should reach beyond one neighborhood to represent the many kinds of nightlife within the LGBT community.
The committee approved Wiener's motion to forward the resolution to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the motion passed "without objection." The resolution will next be considered by the full Board.
