Committee backs forwarding ordinance to let Union Street live-music permits run to 11 p.m.

The Land Use & Transportation Committee on Thursday voted to forward to the full Board an ordinance that would let limited live performance permit (LLP) holders in the Union Street Neighborhood Commercial District request an extension of hours from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Kanishka Karno Ratna, legislative aide to Supervisor Farrell, told the committee the ordinance would align Union Street with most other commercial corridors by allowing LLP holders to apply for a one‑hour extension after a year of operation. Ratna said there is currently one LLP holder in the Union Street NCD and that it had received no complaints since its permit was issued.
During public comment neighborhood representatives and the business owner said the change would be modest and manageable. Robert Bardell, who said he served as president of the Golden Gate Valley Neighborhood Association when LLPs were introduced, said the Bus Stop had been “trouble free” and argued ‘‘I think this is a harmless extension.’’ Bus Stop owner Gabe Froney said the extra hour would help bands that start later and asked the committee to allow more time: “Another hour would be great for us.”
After brief discussion the committee acted on a motion to forward the ordinance to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the motion passed without objection. The ordinance would amend the Police Code to permit the Entertainment Commission, subject to its review, to grant hour extensions in the Union Street NCD where public‑safety and nuisance concerns do not exist.
