The Land Use & Transportation Committee advanced a landmark nomination for Ingleside Presbyterian Church and its interior mural, the "Great Cloud of Witnesses," forwarding the ordinance with amendments to the full Board of Supervisors.
Jen Low, speaking for Supervisor Norman Yee, urged the committee to support designation for the 1345 Ocean Avenue property and highlighted the church's community programs. Susan Parks of the Planning Department presented the staff report, saying the building is significant both for its 1923 neo‑classical ecclesiastical architecture (work of local master Joseph Leonard) and for Reverend Roland Gordon's decades‑long mural environment. "This concludes my presentation," Parks said after describing the building's architectural and cultural significance.
Mike Buehler, president and CEO of San Francisco Heritage, testified that the nomination reflects years of collaborative work and that designation would help address the underrepresentation of African American places among the city's landmarks. Several community speakers from neighborhood preservation groups also supported the nomination.
Committee members paused the item to include Planning Code Section 302 findings in the ordinance. Deputy City Attorney John Givner said his office prepared the amendment and had approved it; the committee accepted the amendments and, without objection, forwarded the item to the full board with a positive recommendation.
The committee record shows the item advanced after committee review; the clerk will populate final docket numbers and board file references as part of the clerical process following adoption.
