Committee advances wireless siting code updates to regulate macro and micro facilities

Supervisor Avalos introduced an ordinance to update the planning code for wireless telecommunication services (WTS), including definitions of micro and macro facilities, land-use controls for siting in historic and distinct neighborhoods, conditional-use length limits for larger macro sites, and clarifications on screening elements that may exceed height limits.
Supervisor Scott Wiener noted the ordinance updates work done over the last several years to limit obtrusive pole-mounted equipment and ensure wireless facilities are designed to fit neighborhood character. Aaron Starr of the Planning Department said the Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval on June 16 and suggested encouraging cleaner fuels for backup generators at such facilities.
A brief public comment question asked whether community rooftop wireless (private Wi‑Fi) would be affected; speakers answered that community rooftop systems would not be impacted.
The committee moved to forward the item to the full board with a positive recommendation.
