Board committee forwards Compton—s Cafeteria Way renaming to full board after community testimony

Supervisor Jane Kim, lead sponsor of the renaming resolution, said the commemorative signage would mark the event—s significance and provide an educational reminder of struggles and progress for transgender people. Committee members emphasized the urgency of the recognition in light of national anti-transgender measures.
Longtime community leaders and witnesses recounted the historical importance of Compton—s Cafeteria. Felicia Elizondo, who described her experience in the Tenderloin and her work in LGBT advocacy, urged the committee to approve the renaming as a way to preserve and honor that history. Ray Ruchi, a transgender law intern with Supervisor Kim—s office, also testified in favor.
The committee took the motion to forward the resolution to the full board with a positive recommendation and no objection. The forwarding is procedural; final approval and installation of signage would occur at later Board and administrative steps.
