The committee approved an ordinance appropriating $410,000 of anticipated PGA Tour revenue to fund preparation work at Harding Park Golf Course for the 2010 Charles Schwab Cup.
Katie Petruccioni of the Recreation and Park Department said the funds would pay for overseeding, fertilizing and sanding to bring Harding Park up to tournament conditions and that the PGA will reimburse the city for up to $1 million in course-preparation and lost-revenue costs under the parties’ contract. Petruccioni said some additional work would be funded in the 2010–11 budget and emphasized that prior events brought tourism and television exposure to the city, increasing play and hotel activity.
Budget analyst Mr. Rose estimated total costs associated with hosting the tournament would be about $1.395 million, combining direct expenditures and lost greens fees; with PGA reimbursement capped at $1 million, the city’s net exposure could be roughly $395,000, which staff suggested could be offset by increased hotel and sales-tax receipts.
Public comment included support from labor union representatives who said the tournament delivers local work opportunities and residents who urged maintenance of the course. The committee took the item without objection.
