The Land Use and Transportation Committee unanimously approved a resolution authorizing a freeway operations and maintenance agreement with the state of California to clarify who will maintain new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) facilities along Van Ness/Highway 101.
Chair Supervisor Malia Cohen called the vote after staff from San Francisco Public Works and the Municipal Transportation Agency summarized the agreement. Deanna Caleros of Public Works said the city would be responsible for “maintenance of the converted dedicated bus lanes, passenger platforms, and landscaping to be constructed as part of the project,” while the remaining traffic lanes would remain Caltrans’ responsibility.
MTA project staff said defining maintenance responsibilities is part of securing Caltrans’ support for converting two traffic lanes to dedicated transit right-of-way on the corridor. After a brief public comment period, Supervisor Jane Kim moved the item forward with a positive recommendation; the committee recorded the motion as unanimous.
The committee’s action clears a procedural hurdle for the Van Ness BRT project by tying long-term maintenance obligations to a formal agreement with Caltrans. The resolution will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda as scheduled.
