Supervisor Sandy Lee Feuer, the primary sponsor of a proposed charter amendment to condition non‑citizen parent voting in school board elections on a Board‑adopted implementing ordinance, told the Rules Committee she would withdraw and table the amendment on Jan. 24.
Feuer said the proposal grew from a year of discussions with immigrant advocacy groups and attorneys and that some advocates supported the concept while others raised concerns. She said she withdrew the amendment to focus on developing an implementation plan and funding to ensure the Department of Elections, in collaboration with community groups, can provide culturally and linguistically competent education and outreach for prospective non‑citizen voters.
A public commenter representing Innovate Public School expressed support for this implementation-focused approach. The committee accepted the sponsor’s motion to table the item.
