Committee clears sidewalk encroachment for Bayview Opera House renovation

The Land Use & Transportation Committee on May 5 voted unanimously to recommend a resolution permitting a street encroachment at the Newcomb Avenue frontage of 4705 Third Street to complete the renovation of the Bayview Opera House.
Judy Nemtsov, director of community investments at the San Francisco Arts Commission, told the committee the building — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — is in the final phase of a $5,300,000 renovation funded largely by city partners. Nemtsov said the encroachment is needed to install a Walter Hood–designed contemporary stairway and to provide required sidewalk access. "This project's been before you before. This is the final permitting that we need to complete the renovation on the Bayview Opera House," she said.
Public comment on the item was brief and included one extended remark not directly addressing the encroachment. After committee discussion, Supervisor Jane Kim moved a positive recommendation to the full Board; Supervisor Scott Weiner seconded, and the committee voted to forward the measure with a unanimous recommendation.
The resolution now goes to the Board of Supervisors for final consideration; staff said the project anticipates a ribbon cutting in the fall once construction is complete.
