Rules Committee backs reappointment of Al Perez to Entertainment Commission

The Rules Committee on Sept. 13 recommended the reappointment of Al Perez to the San Francisco Entertainment Commission. Perez, an eight‑year incumbent, described his background in graphic design, community organizing and his work producing the Pistahan Parade and Filipino Heritage Nights. “I am asking for your support for my reappointment to the Entertainment Commission,” Perez said in his remarks.

Supervisors thanked Perez and asked about changes in the entertainment community since his last appointment. Perez said the commission now has stronger enforcement authority — including citation power, temporary revocations and an additional inspector — and has staff dedicated to outdoor events. He said he would prioritize better communication with the nightlife industry and expanding understanding of entertainment’s economic contribution.

Members of the Filipino community — including Mary Lee Mondejar (Filipino Women’s Network) and Don Marcos (San Francisco Filipino Cultural Center) — publicly endorsed Perez and cited his leadership on neighborhood festivals. After public comment and committee discussion, a supervisor moved and the committee seconded approving the mayor’s reappointment with a positive recommendation; the chair ordered the item moved. The committee did not record a roll‑call vote on the recommendation.
