The Rules Committee on Tuesday moved to forward a positive recommendation to the full Board of Supervisors to appoint Laura Thomas to seat number 3 on the Entertainment Commission.
Laura Thomas introduced herself as the interim state director for the Drug Policy Alliance and said she currently occupies the Entertainment Commission’s public-health seat. “I was just appointed by the board last year as I was filling out the end of someone else’s term, and I’m now applying for my own term,” Thomas said, noting she was elected vice president of the commission by fellow commissioners earlier in the year. She described her background in public health, including harm reduction and HIV prevention, and offered to answer committee questions.
Chair Supervisor Asha Safai praised Thomas’s expertise and told the committee, “It’s important to have your voice on the board,” pointing to rising drug‑related concerns in the entertainment sector. A committee member moved to recommend approval to the full board; the motion was moved without objection and the item will proceed to the Board of Supervisors for final action.
No members of the public registered comment on Item 1 at committee. The committee’s action at rules was a recommendation; final appointment requires Board of Supervisors confirmation.
