Board committee accepts $874,700 MHSA prevention allocation; plan to issue RFPs for suicide prevention and peer outreach

The Budget & Finance Committee recommended approval of a resolution to accept and expend an additional $874,700 allocated under the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) for prevention and early intervention programs.
Dr. Alice Gleghorn, deputy director of Community Behavioral Health Services at the Department of Public Health, told the committee the Board had previously approved $54,692,486 in MHSA funding and the additional $874,700 is for prevention and early intervention (PEI) initiatives. She said the PEI plan has completed public hearings and the 30-day posting period and staff will issue RFPs for suicide prevention services, trauma recovery and recovery services, and peer outreach and training after state approval.
Budget analyst Harvey Rose recommended approval. Supervisors asked for details about which existing services would be backfilled; Dr. Gleghorn said the crisis response team ($348,000) is currently an existing service and that other funded services were prioritized in planning and some funds move from community supports into PEI for prevention-focused work. She said many PEI initiatives will target those 18 and under and that DPH intends the RFP process to distribute services across neighborhoods rather than cluster them.
The committee forwarded the resolution to the full Board with a recommendation for approval.
