The Rules Committee reviewed two mayoral nominations to the Planning Commission on Sept. 8, 2016 and recommended positive committee reports to the full Board.
Myrna Melgar, nominated by the Board president, outlined her urban-planning background, experience at the Mayor’s Office of Housing, service on the Building Inspection Commission and community organizing credentials. She told supervisors she would apply a racial and economic justice lens to land-use questions and emphasized neighborhood preference and affordable housing priorities.
Mayor Ed Lee’s nominee Joel Koppel (Coppell) described his work in the electrical construction industry, community engagement on major projects and efforts to bring labor perspectives into land-use decisions. Labor, business and community groups — including multiple unions and nonprofit housing representatives — offered on-record endorsements for Koppel; a current planning commissioner and several supervisors also spoke in favor of both nominees.
The committee amended its earlier committee reports to approve both nominations and sent positive recommendations to the full Board for action.
