Committee forwards $200,000 DOJ grant for juvenile mental-health services to the Board

The Budget and Finance Committee agreed to forward to the full Board a resolution allowing the San Francisco Department of Public Health to accept a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to expand mental-health services for youth detained at the county juvenile hall.
Dr. Bob Sabai, director of community behavioral health services, said the two-year grant (Sept. 1, 2008–Aug. 31, 2010) will identify youth at serious risk for mental-health needs and provide services both in the hall and in the community. He said DPH will provide in-kind staff time as part of the local match, estimated to be roughly $50,000 equivalent.
The budget analyst noted the item did not meet the committee’s fiscal-impact threshold and the controller’s office did not raise objection. A public commenter urged the Board and committee to prioritize mental-health funding.
Committee members agreed to send the resolution forward for Board consideration.
