Rules Committee names Victoria Baranetzky and Eric Eldon to Sunshine Ordinance Task Force

The Rules Committee voted on June 9 to appoint Victoria Baranetzky and reappoint Eric Eldon to the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force.
Baranetzky, introduced as a First Amendment lawyer and former New York Times lawyer with experience at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, said she is eager to apply her freedom‑of‑information expertise to the task force. Eric Eldon, cofounder and editor in chief of Hoodline, described his incumbent service, interest in automating records and requests, and plans to work with city data offices to reduce the time and backlog associated with large information requests.
The Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and its Freedom of Information committee publicly endorsed both nominees; SPJ speakers noted a careful vetting process and commended Eldon’s work on calendar transparency and complaint adjudication. Supervisors asked Eldon about technology, decorum on the task force and operational improvements; Eldon said he supports streamlining requests, automating calendar publication and pursuing ordinance amendments under consideration.
Supervisor Malia Cohen moved to appoint Baranetzky and support Eldon’s reconfirmation; the motion was seconded and the committee approved both nominees without objection. Eldon has served on the task force since his confirmation in August (the transcript notes service beginning in September).
