Rules committee approves several advisory-board and commission appointments

SAN FRANCISCO — The Rules Committee on Thursday advanced a slate of appointments to advisory boards and commissions covering bicycle policy, parks and open space, veterans affairs and reentry services.
Bicycle Advisory Committee: Melissa Mendoza presented her volunteer work with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (since 2008) and bicycle-parking and safety advocacy. She told the committee she wants to "advocate on behalf of bicyclists who have been injured or killed while riding" and to push for safer infrastructure and education for rideshare drivers. Supervisors moved Mendoza's nomination to the full Board (her appointment will be forwarded).
Parks, Recreation & Open Space: Jane Weil and Kenneth Maley (Ken Maley) sought two seats on the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Advisory Committee. Weil highlighted District 6's shortage of open space and her work with a district open-space task force; Maley described decades of park activism including landmarking Coit Tower and Washington Square. Both were recommended to the full Board without objection.
Veterans Affairs Commission: The committee considered nine applicants for three seats. Michael Maffei (incumbent) emphasized bylaws changes, veterans homelessness and improving relations between the commission, Board and mayor. Bill Barnacle and Kimberly Flaherty each spoke to veteran outreach, mentorship and housing. The committee nominated and forwarded Michael Maffei (seat 9), Kimberly Flaherty (seat 6) and William Barnacle (seat 3) to the full Board.
Reentry Council: Seven applicants sought one available seat. Candidates described lived experience, work on reentry programs and priorities including housing, employment, mentorship and mental-health supports. After public testimony from community organizations (GLIDE, Hospitality House) and discussion about additional vacancies in June, the committee appointed Angela Coleman to seat 2 and encouraged other applicants to apply for upcoming openings.
Committee members repeatedly praised applicants' lived experience and community work and noted several additional vacancies will be filled at future meetings. All nominations were taken forward to the full Board or recorded as committee recommendations.
