Rules Committee advances or appoints six advisory and board candidates

Food Security Task Force: Ryan Thayer described four years organizing in the Tenderloin and work converting neighborhood corner stores to sell healthier products as part of the Tenderloin Healthy Corner Store Coalition. He said the program trained resident "Food Guardians," tracked point-of-sale data and scaled successful retail conversions. Supervisor Eric Marr moved to appoint Thayer to seat 5; Supervisor Malia Cohen seconded and the committee approved the appointment without objection.
San Francisco Health Authority: Joseph David Woods, chief pharmacy officer for San Francisco Health Net, said aligning formularies and managing specialty drug costs are priorities. Sumi Sousa of the Health Authority spoke in support. The committee moved Woods to the Health Authority by motion and approved without objection.
Children and Families First Commission (First 5): Two applicants, Dr. Zia Malawa, a pediatrician with experience in community clinics, and Naz Talai, with public-health and program-design experience, sought the single seat. Supervisors praised both candidates; the committee moved Dr. Zia Malawa with a positive recommendation to seat 8 and approved the nomination without objection.
Entertainment Commission: Applicants included Charles Stefanatsky, Joaquin Castillo Arana and Laura Thomas (public-health and nightlife policy background). Supervisors debated the value of public-health expertise versus expanding representation; Supervisor Malia Cohen moved to appoint Joaquin Castillo Arana to seat 3 and the committee approved the appointment without objection.
Veterans Affairs Commission: Multiple applicants and public comments were presented. Michael Maffei, president of the Veterans Affairs Commission, spoke in support of Scott Joyner (appearing by letter). After discussion, the committee appointed Scott Joyner (Joiner) to seat 11 by motion and unanimous consent.
Most appointments were advanced by motion and taken without objection; the committee recorded the nominees for full Board confirmation where appropriate.
