Rules Committee forwards mayoral appointment and multiple reappointments to advisory boards

The Rules Committee of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Sept. 24 heard presentations and public comment on a slate of mayoral appointments and reappointments to city advisory bodies and moved each item forward without objection.
Chair John Avalos opened the meeting and said items acted upon by the committee would appear on the Oct. 6 Board of Supervisors agenda. The committee considered the mayor's appointment of Linda Martley Jordan to the Children, Youth and Their Families Oversight and Advisory Committee (term ending July 1, 2017). Jordan, a San Francisco Unified School District employee since 2005, said she has worked in elementary and high schools and on special projects focused on African American families. "I bring to the table a desire and a commitment that has been a part of me since I began this task," Jordan told the committee. Two community leaders — Kirk Grimes of the A. Philip Randolph Institute and Greg Peters of the San Francisco Coalition of Essential Small Schools — spoke in support of her nomination. Supervisor Malia Cohen moved to file the hearing; Supervisor Katie Tang seconded and the committee proceeded by unanimous consent.
The committee then heard one applicant for an indefinite-term seat on the Treasure Island Development Authority Citizens Advisory Board. The applicant, identified in the transcript as Mr. Brentlinger, described experience creating walkable neighborhoods, restoring wetlands and managing brownfield cleanups; he told the committee the island's environmental remediation "has to be addressed and in a responsible way." The chair said the item would be continued to allow the district supervisor to consider additional applicants.
Other actions included appointments and reappointments across multiple advisory bodies. Supervisors supported Nicholas Balani for the Park, Recreation and Open Space Advisory Commission; reappointed members to the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee (including Rebecca Hogue and Sonia, identified in the transcript as "Sonia Coase"); reappointed members to Assessment Appeals Boards Nos. 1 and 2 (including Joseph Tam, Mark Watts, Luisa Mendoza, Angela Chung and Joyce Lewis); and reappointed several members to the Graffiti Advisory Board (including John Austin, Darcy Brown and Rebecca Delgado Rotman). Each motion was made, seconded and taken without objection.
Several applicants described program work and community outreach: Jordan recounted organizing a "Black Family Day" that drew more than 800 families and on-site scholarship offers; Rebecca Delgado Rotman and others described mural projects and youth programs intended to channel creative energy and reduce vandalism. Applicants to assessment appeals boards emphasized neutrality and reliance on facts during hearings.
The committee completed its business and adjourned. Items acted on by the committee will proceed to the full Board of Supervisors, and the committee noted items would appear on the Oct. 6 agenda unless otherwise stated in committee proceedings.
