The Rules Committee on July 9 appointed Tony Parks to a term on the San Francisco Mental Health Board to fill one vacancy and help restore quorum.
Tony Parks, who identified himself as a long‑term San Francisco resident and a longtime health‑care worker who now lives in a board-and-care and receives mental‑health services, described his history of attendance at Mental Health Board meetings and his dual perspective as both a provider and a consumer. "I feel like I know about issues of being the provider and being the consumer," Parks said during his three‑minute presentation.
Helena Brooke, executive director of the Mental Health Board, and other public commenters urged the Rules Committee to fill the seat so the board can meet quorum and continue oversight work; Brooke said Parks had been a consistent attendee and contributor during the past year. Based on those remarks, Supervisor John Avalos expressed support for Parks, Supervisor Katie Tang moved to appoint him and the motion was seconded and approved without objection.
Committee members said the appointment will help the board meet quorum and continue its monthly work including committee reviews.
