The Rules Committee advanced three reappointments to the Historic Preservation Commission and discussed priorities for the commission's next term.
Andrew Wolfram, a historic architect, said a citywide survey of historic resources would improve transparency and help property owners and planners identify landmark status in advance of transactions. "If we can get information out front that is going to be extremely useful," he told supervisors (SEG 336). Richard Johns, the historian nominee, emphasized making the commission's work more accessible and expanding recognition of cultural assets that have historic value even if communities did not build landmark structures (SEG 487). Carl Haas, the commission president up for reappointment, highlighted outreach programs and realtor training to improve outcomes for homeowners and small property owners (SEG 739).
Supervisors questioned how the commission had improved consistency, citing controversies from several years prior. All three nominees argued that the commission has become more predictable and unanimous in most decisions, in part because of revised rules of procedure and outreach (SEG 382–388; 514–520). Supervisors also urged continued emphasis on identifying cultural assets tied to historically under‑recognized communities.
The committee voted to forward favorable recommendations on all three reappointments as a committee report to the full Board.
