During the reading of agenda items, Supervisor Sean Ellsburn told the Budget and Finance Committee he had received multiple constituent complaints about difficulties obtaining basic permits and death-related certifications from the Department of Public Health and the medical examiner.
Ellsburn said two constituents and several others reported delayed funerals and slow responses for death certificates and cremation permits, and suggested the issue might be more appropriate for the government audits and oversight committee to pursue in the coming months. He described the subject as "terribly morbid" but important because of reported customer-service failures and operational delays.
Chair Peskin acknowledged the concern and suggested an offline meeting with the department and Supervisor Sandoval and the complainants to clarify the issues and next steps. No formal referral or vote was recorded on this topic during the meeting; Ellsburn asked staff and the committee to note the complaints and consider follow-up oversight.
