The Rules Committee moved to recommend Gary McCoy to fill a vacancy on the Market & Octavia Community Advisory Committee.
Two candidates sought the single seat. Baron Wiggins/Brigham (presented as Baron Brigham) described decades of business and neighborhood advocacy in Hayes Valley, including early involvement in the campaign to remove the nearby freeway and work on community design charrettes. Gary McCoy, who described personal experiences with homelessness, HIV diagnosis and recovery, emphasized long-term volunteer work, pedestrian-safety advocacy and service on neighborhood advisory bodies (including the Pedestrian Safety Advisory Committee, where he is vice chair).
Public endorsers from recovery organizations, community associations and congressional and supervisors' staff praised McCoy's outreach, steady community presence and ability to relay information between City Hall and neighbors. Supervisors said both candidates were strong, but on balance moved to forward McCoy's nomination with a positive recommendation to the full Board.
The committee's action advances the nominee to the Board of Supervisors for final appointment.
