Rules Committee forwards four appointments to Commission on Animal Control and Welfare

The Rules Committee on May 14 forwarded four nominees to the full Board of Supervisors for appointment to the Commission on Animal Control and Welfare, issuing a positive committee recommendation.
Supervisor Katie Tang formally moved to reappoint Anne Marie Fortier (seat 1) and Dr. Sherry O’Neil (seat 7) and to appoint Davie Lang (seat 3) and Nancy Haines (seat 2). Supervisor Norman Yee said he also found other applicants competitive but favored those present at the hearing; the motion passed "with no objection." The clerk had told the committee there were four vacant seats and seven applicants for terms ending April 30, 2015 and April 30, 2016.
Applicants described a mix of professional and volunteer experience: Amy Van Ness, who described prior law-enforcement work and volunteer service; Nancy Haines, founder of Ryder Ranch Rescue and a longtime volunteer with SF-area organizations; James York, former pet-store owner who urged broader involvement by retail adopters; Davie Lang, a PETA Foundation alumnus who emphasized outreach to younger residents; Anne Marie Fortier and Dr. Sherry O’Neil stressed community outreach, education, and disaster preparedness for animals. Public commenters urged cultural competency, broader outreach and more engagement with neighborhoods.
The committee’s action is a positive recommendation to the full board; final appointments will take effect only after Board confirmation.
