Students and staff showcased programs; district honored STARS recipients and SRO

The Elko County School District board paused regular business to recognize staff and hear student-led presentations showcasing school cultures and community initiatives.
Mister Anderson read a nomination honoring Maria Ruiz, a counselor at Adobe Middle School, for more than a decade of student-centered service, citing home visits, community donation drives and leadership of wellness efforts. Jesse Mittelstaedt, a special-education teacher at Sage Elementary, was also recognized following parent and student nominations praising individualized supports.
T. Dub Cunningham, principal of Southside Elementary, introduced a student video about the school's house system (launched about a year prior) that awards points for behaviors like critical thinking, communication and collaboration and tracks points in ClassDojo; Cunningham said the program has been "highly successful" in building community and positive behaviors.
Adobe Middle School student council president Annie McConnell and peers presented Hawks Halloween (Oct. 30), a family event that collects candy, supplies and donations for the Elko County Animal Shelter. Student council reported a running total of 339.5 pounds of candy, led by Alexander's class with 87.9 pounds; students described plans for themed hallways and community outreach to local businesses.
The board acknowledged local partners who donated gifts for STARS recipients: Leanne's Floral Designs, Maverick Gaming, Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise, The Star, Fratelli Pizza and Sugar e Spice.
The recognitions and student presentations were offered as part of the board's regular agenda; trustees thanked students, staff and community partners and encouraged continued nominations for the STARS program.
