Summary
The Rules Committee appointed two nominees to the Airport Facilities Naming Advisory Committee and continued two seats to Nov. 21 to allow further outreach and mayoral appointments; the discussion included support for considering Harvey Milk and emphasis on broader community representation.
The Rules Committee on Oct. 31 moved to appoint two members to the newly formed Airport Facilities Naming Advisory Committee and to continue two other seats so supervisors and the mayor's office can expand outreach and ensure diverse representation.
Applicants described their civic and airport-related experience and frequently referenced the possibility of naming an airport terminal for Supervisor Harvey Milk. Alex Walker said he had worked on the campaign to name a feature for Milk and argued naming could affirm San Francisco's human-rights leadership. "I wanted to take the opportunity to... name a terminal after Supervisor Milk," Walker said. Other applicants noted airport-branding, travel-industry, historic and community perspectives.
Sponsor Supervisor Campos said outreach had been conducted to recruit diverse applicants but that response was limited; she and other supervisors emphasized adding African American, transgender and broader neighborhood representation. Supervisor Sean Elsber (Bridal) moved to appoint John Vallesteros and Maggie Whelan to two seats and continue the remaining two appointments for three weeks to Nov. 21 for additional outreach; the motion passed with no objection.
The committee asked staff to continue coordinating with the mayor's office to fill the remaining seats and to return to Rules with any additional nominees.
