Rules Committee forwards Al Perez reappointment to Entertainment Commission

The Rules Committee on Oct. 31 advanced Mayor Ed Lee's nomination to reappoint Al Perez to the Entertainment Commission, forwarding the item to the full Board of Supervisors with a positive recommendation.
Al Perez told the committee he has lived in the Excelsior District for more than three decades and outlined work on a neighborhood summit, a safety-and-security guidebook for nightlife venues and branding materials for the commission. "I would love the opportunity to continue as a commissioner because I have a passion for this city," Perez said during his remarks.
Members of the Filipino and neighborhood communities spoke in support. Mary Lee Mandahar, founder of the Filipina Women's Network, urged the supervisors to approve Perez and cited nightlife'industry figures and the commission's role in neighborhood outreach. Public commenters described Perez as a long-standing community organizer who has coordinated stakeholders including police, fire and neighborhood groups.
Chair Supervisor Norman Yee called for a motion to forward the appointment to the full board; the motion was moved, seconded and passed "with no objection," the committee record shows.
The nomination will now appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda for final consideration. The Entertainment Commission appointment listed in the committee packet carried a term through July 1, 2017.
