Kimberly Brandon outlined her long-standing involvement with waterfront projects and said she has worked with three mayors and multiple commissioners on projects that reshaped the Northern Waterfront. "With the planned development of Sewell Lot 337 and Pier 70, we have an extraordinary opportunity to put thousands of people to work and to create new communities," she told the committee.
Supervisors pressed Brandon on how to ensure large projects such as the Warriors-related developments and America's Cup provide tangible benefits to neighborhoods, including job opportunities, discounted leasing for community organizations, and childcare access in new residential areas. Brandon said the Port has policies to offer discounted rents to nonprofits and community groups and that staff is reviewing leasing policies; she also said the Port staff, led by Director Monique Moyer, has worked to protect the Port's finances amid changing project scales.
Port Director Monique Moyer told the committee Brandon brings institutional memory and financial stewardship: for the first time in decades, the Port is investing its own funds with city help and has accrued monies for Southern Waterfront beautification. Members of the public and organizational representatives, including the San Francisco African American Democratic Club and the Bayview YMCA board, spoke in support of Brandon's reappointment.
The committee moved the nomination to the full Board without objection. The nomination is scheduled to appear on the Board's June 18 agenda for confirmation.
