Rules Committee recommends Molly Steiner for LGBT Seniors Task Force after focus on diversity and outreach

The Rules Committee heard extensive testimony March 21 from more than 30 applicants for a single vacancy on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Seniors Task Force and moved one recommendation to the full Board.
Committee members emphasized the task force’s responsibilities to advise on services and outreach for LGBT seniors and pressed applicants on experience working with ethnic communities and cultural competency. Supervisor Malia Cohen repeatedly asked candidates to describe their work in minority LGBT communities; several applicants, including James Wagner and others, discussed outreach, legal‑services projects and program work targeted at transgender and ethnic communities.
Supervisors also reviewed the task force’s composition. The clerk reported the body had 14 seats (one vacancy) and a current imbalance favoring male over female members; supervisors said they were seeking to improve gender balance while also maintaining expertise and program experience.
After questions and discussion, the committee moved to forward Molly (Miles) Steiner — who described long experience with LGBT aging services and leadership at Stepping Stone adult day health centers — as the committee’s recommendation to the Board of Supervisors. The committee recorded no objection to forwarding her nomination.
The committee directed the clerk to place the forwarded recommendation on the next Board agenda for final confirmation.
