Rules Committee advances two Historic Preservation Commission nominations

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors' Rules Committee on Feb. 7 advanced two mayoral nominations to the Historic Preservation Commission to the full Board. Chair Supervisor Norman Yee called the committee into session and supervisors took both nominations without objection.
Diane Matsuda, who told the committee she has served on the commission "since its inception," said preservation work should include "recognizing culturally specific businesses, community centers, theaters and faith-based organizations" so that all San Franciscans feel an equal voice in what the city protects. Multiple supporters spoke on her behalf. Bill Segaya, a resident, noted Matsuda's statewide leadership roles with the California Cultural and Heritage Endowment and the Civil Liberties Public Education Program and urged unanimous approval. Planning Commissioner Catherine Moore described Matsuda as "broad-minded, open and totally independent," while Bob Hamaguchi of Japantown organizations highlighted Matsuda's local ties and attention to economic benefits of preservation.
Aaron Hyland, a preservation architect with Architectural Resources Group, summarized more than two decades of experience restoring culturally significant buildings and sites, including work on the Angel Island Immigration Station. Margie O'Driscoll, executive director of AIA San Francisco, and Mike Bueller of San Francisco Architectural Heritage both urged support for Hyland's appointment, citing professional qualifications and mentoring work with younger architects.
Chair Norman Yee and members of the committee signaled consensus and advanced both nominees to the full Board for consideration. The committee record shows the motions were taken "without objection." The full Board will consider final confirmation and term details at its upcoming agenda.
The committee also noted administrative housekeeping: material considered at this meeting will appear on the Feb. 26 Board of Supervisors agenda unless otherwise indicated.
