The committee considered Item 5 to appoint six members to the Shelter Monitoring Committee from 15 applicants. Staff described a recent mass resignation of committee members and a shortfall of Spanish-speaking representatives; one staff member present said language capacity is low and requested Spanish-speaking appointees for outreach in the Mission District.
Several applicants with lived experience and direct-service backgrounds addressed the committee, including applicants who are current or former shelter residents and volunteers. Commissioners and advocates spoke in favor of appointing people with direct experience inside shelters to strengthen monitoring and client representation.
Given quorum concerns and the number of applicants, the chair proposed a set of five appointments for specified seats that matched eligibility criteria (including seats reserved for current or formerly homeless applicants and seats requiring direct-service experience). The committee moved five applicants forward to the full Board with recommendation and continued Seat 6 to the call of the chair so a current member (Will Daley) could remain until a replacement is available.
The committee asked staff to ensure seat assignments match the ordinance's eligibility requirements and to prioritize Spanish-speaking members where needed. The full Board will consider the committee's recommended appointees at its next meeting.
