Committee forwards $75.6M in federal grants for Muni capital projects

The Budget & Finance Committee on Sept. 26 reviewed and forwarded two resolutions authorizing the Municipal Transportation Agency to accept and expend federal capital funds: roughly $29.45 million in fixed‑guideway funds (Section 5309) and about $46.18 million in Section 5307/other surface transportation program funds. Supervisor Sophie Maxwell (recorded as Supervisor Dutt in the clerk’s read) and MTA staff described the grants as support for rehabilitation of historic cable cars that will extend their life by decades, continued construction of the Metro East light‑rail facility, fare equipment for new lines, vehicle rehabilitation and preventive maintenance.
Jerry Levine and MTA project managers were present to answer detailed questions; Muni staff emphasized the grants support ongoing capital work and that project managers will track uses. Several public commenters spoke in favor of the federal funding. The committee took the items to the full Board with recommendation.
