Committee approves delay to certify 2012 public-financing candidates pending redistricting

The Rules Committee voted Feb. 16 to forward an ordinance delaying certification of 2012 supervisorial candidates seeking public financing until the redistricting task force completes its work. The change allows candidates to apply but postpones certification so applicants can verify residency and district eligibility after boundary changes are finalized.
Andrea Brasse of Supervisor Cohen’s office and Ethics Commission staff said the delay is intended to avoid administratively certifying candidates whose districts may change as the redistricting process proceeds (the task force expected to finish by April 15). Ethics Commission staff supported the approach as providing needed breathing room while staff work to refine the public-finance program.
The committee moved the ordinance forward with a positive recommendation.
