Rules Committee advances Celine Kennelly for Immigrant Rights Commission seat

Celine Kennelly told the Rules Committee on April 19 that she came to San Francisco in 1999 and has worked with immigrant communities for more than a decade, including as executive director of the Irish Immigration Pastoral Centre.
Kennelly said the immigration system worked for her but not for many others and argued the Immigrant Rights Commission can help formulate policies that protect immigrants and ensure due process. “I am a US citizen and very, very, very proud to have that blue passport,” she said in remarks to the committee.
Supervisor Campos, an immigrant himself, asked Kennelly how she would handle relationships with federal enforcement. Kennelly said she favors open exchange with federal authorities while prioritizing protection of immigrant rights at the local level.
Public endorsements came from the commission’s vice chair and staff from the Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs, who cited Kennelly’s census outreach and coalition work. Supervisor Farrell moved to forward the nomination with a positive recommendation; the committee approved the motion without objection. The appointment will appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda on May 1.
