Rules Committee moves six candidates forward for Immigrant Rights Commission

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee on Oct. 18 heard presentations from six candidates for the Immigrant Rights Commission and moved all six names forward for appointment, including two residency waivers, without objection.
Kathleen Cole, a college anthropology instructor who said she authored a book titled Remaking Citizenship and has nearly 30 years of involvement with immigrant community organizations in the Mission District, told the committee she would emphasize public education and immigrant parent integration. “I would bring both my scholarship and experience … and my personal experiences,” Cole said.
Mario Paz, executive director of the Good Samaritan Family Resource Center, described decades of community work dating to the sanctuary movement and said he would promote positive stories about immigrant contributions to counter xenophobia. Angus McCarthy, chair of the commission, and Felix Fuentes, vice chair, spoke in support of the reappointments and highlighted the commission’s work on language access, a comprehensive immigration-reform summit and a recently finalized report.
Chair Kim and committee members discussed priorities including language access, outreach to immigrant parents and immigrant women’s labor rights. The Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs noted the commission’s upcoming Immigrant Youth Summit on Oct. 28 at the West Bay Conference Center.
Speaker 17 moved to accept residency waivers for Mario Paz and Melba Maldonado and to recommend appointment of Kathleen Cole, Mario Paz, Angus McCarthy, Felix Fuentes, Melvin Maldonado and Toye Moses to available seats. The motion carried without objection and the committee said it would forward the recommendations to the full Board of Supervisors.
The committee did not take further substantive votes on programmatic matters during the item; appointments will proceed through the Board process.
The Rules Committee then called the next item on the agenda.
