Rules committee backs Balboa Park Station community advisory committee

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee voted Feb. 16 to send a resolution establishing a Balboa Park Station Area Plan Community Advisory Committee to the full board with a positive recommendation. The committee is intended to provide community oversight on transportation and public-improvement projects around the multimodal Balboa BART station.
Supporters at the meeting said a standing advisory body is overdue. Alvaro Sanchez of the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center told the committee the CAC would help ensure that community priorities are “well represented” as land-use and transportation projects progress. Dan Weaver, who has been involved in the Balboa plan process for years, called a citizens advisory committee “a useful thing” to shepherd station-area efforts.
Supervisor John Avalos, the item’s author, described the station area as a congested, multimodal hub and said the CAC would hold city departments accountable for pedestrian safety, clearer wayfinding and implementing elements of the Balboa Park Station Area Plan. Lisa Pagan, a project manager for the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, said the CAC would help coordinate streetscape, funding applications and project priorities in coordination with community groups and the Community Benefit District.
Supervisor David Campos moved the committee to forward the resolution with a positive recommendation; the motion carried without opposition. The matter will now go before the full Board of Supervisors.
