Rules Committee forwards two Veterans Affairs Commission nominees to full Board

The Rules Committee on Thursday recommended that the Board of Supervisors appoint Jordan Towers to seat 10 and Dorothy Guy to seat 12 on the Veterans Affairs Commission, advancing both nominees to the full Board with a positive recommendation.
Chair Jane Kim opened the hearing and said the committee would call the four applicants in agenda order. Jordan Towers introduced himself as an Iraq War veteran and former United States Marine Corps infantryman and described founding veterans programs at City College of San Francisco and his work with veteransadvocacy groups. "I'm an Iraq war veteran," Towers said, noting priorities of digital outreach and job placement for veterans.
Dorothy Guy, who served in the Army and deployed to Iraq, told the committee she wanted to ensure returning veterans, particularly women, had access to employment, health care and educational resources. "I really would love to be a part of this commission because I feel that with the amount of Vets that are coming back from this war, there's going to be a lot of issues that are unique to us," Guy said.
Several current commissioners and public commenters urged the committee to seat both candidates. Steven Nodsell, secretary of the Veterans Affairs Commission, praised Towersprior work with the commission and support for veteranscourts and younger veterans, and said he supported seating Towers and Guy.
Supervisors discussed commission demographics, noting an ongoing effort to increase post-9/11 veteran and female representation. After discussion, the committee moved to forward Jordan Towers and Dorothy Guy with a positive recommendation; the chair also said Kevin Reedsapplication could be forwarded to the mayor for consideration for other vacancies.
The committee did not record a roll-call vote on the floor but the Chair indicated the recommendations would go forward to the full Board on the regular schedule.
