Rules Committee backs Victor Nelson for SRO task force seat after competing endorsements

The Rules Committee voted to forward Victor Nelson's nomination for one tenant seat on the SRO Task Force after hearing testimony from three applicants and a wave of public endorsers.
Nelson, a social worker who said he lives at the Altamont Hotel and has served as an SRO tenant advocate, described years of outreach and tenant‑rights work. "My goals will be empowerment programs for the hotel community and better coordination with the SFPD," he said during his remarks.
LJ Cirillo, who chairs the Shelter Monitoring Committee and is an advocate with the Coalition on Homelessness, also applied and told the committee she would push for moving families out of SROs into permanent housing and for stronger enforcement of standards of care. Charles Pitts, a longtime tenant advocate, described his experience attending SRO task‑force meetings and pressing for habitability reforms.
Public commenters and representatives of SRO outreach programs spoke for multiple candidates. The Mission SRO Collaborative and several individual tenants endorsed Nelson for his combination of field experience and professional training; others urged appointment of a different candidate for continuity with existing committees.
Chair Jane Kim noted the geographic concentration of SROs in District 6 and changes in district demographics since the 2000 census. After discussion, the committee moved and agreed to forward Victor Nelson's nomination with recommendation to the full board.
The full Board will consider the appointment in its regular calendar.
