Clerk called Item 1, a motion to appoint Supervisor Scott Wiener to the MTC. The committee heard public comment from Nancy Cross, who argued MTC has been "failing to carry out" regional coordination and clean-air goals and urged the committee to hold a side-by-side opportunity for the two candidates to answer questions from the committee and the public. Cross said the size of the region and the interests involved make the current appointment process inadequate: "MTC is an appointed agency... It's ludicrous. They can't do it."
After public comment, Supervisor Kim said, "Without objections, we will continue this item to the call of the chair," postponing the appointment until the chair places it on a future agenda so the committee or chair can address the public’s request for candidate scrutiny.
No vote on the appointment was taken at the Rules Committee meeting; the item is pending further action by the chair and possible future committee consideration.
