Rules Committee backs amended ordinance to create Central Market/Tenderloin Citizens Advisory Committee after broad neighborhood support

The Rules Committee on May 19 considered an ordinance to amend the business and tax regulations code to create a Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Central Market Street and Tenderloin area. Supervisor Kim said the draft had been revised to have appointments come through Rules Committee, and the Committee opened the item to public comment.
Community speakers spoke in favor. Lorenzo Listana of the Tenderloin Filipino Community Association said the CAC would ‘‘ensure that the residents would have a role in this revitalization effort’’ and urged supervisors to support the committee. Multiple speakers from SomCan, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development and residents of SROs described overcrowding, rising rents and displacement pressures and asked supervisors to back the advisory body as a mechanism for neighborhood input. Steve Wu of Tenderloin Neighborhood Development acknowledged the committee’s advisory role but said the amendments were acceptable and urged the committee to move the ordinance forward.
Supervisor Farrell moved to adopt the amendments and forward the ordinance to the full Board with a recommendation; the committee approved the motion without objection.
Next steps: the ordinance, as amended, will be forwarded to the full Board of Supervisors for final consideration.
