San Francisco — The Rules Committee on Jan. 3 voted to forward Vince Courtney’s nomination to the Public Utilities Commission, following extensive support from labor unions, community groups and city officials.
Courtney, who described his Fillmore neighborhood roots and service with construction trades and Local 261, told the committee he would prioritize community benefits, local hiring and collaboration. Dozens of witnesses testified in his favor: the San Francisco Labor Council, Laborers Local 261 leadership, the a Philip Randolph Institute, Rec & Park leadership and community organizations emphasized Courtney’s record on local hiring and community‑labor partnerships.
Supervisors who spoke in favor stressed the PUC’s immediate workload (including major capital projects and community benefits obligations) and said a vacancy on the commission posed operational risks. The committee took a motion to send item 7 (Courtney’s appointment) forward with recommendation and table item 8 (rejection).
