Committee continues proposed one‑time shortening of two Health Service Board terms after pushback

The Rules Committee on June 18 considered a one‑time charter amendment that would shorten the terms of two members of the Health Service Board (one 5‑year term to 3 years and a separate 5‑year term to 2 years), an item introduced by Supervisor Elsberg. Members of the public and stakeholders, including representatives of the Health Service Board and longtime civic advocates, urged caution.

Jeri Meister and others told the committee the Health Service Board had not supported the proposed changes and stressed continuity and fiduciary responsibility as reasons to retain the current staggered five‑year terms. Speaking officials urged the Board to allow the Health Service Board and relevant stakeholders more time to weigh and, if appropriate, propose alternative approaches. The committee moved to continue the item to the call of the chair for additional discussion and to allow the sponsor and the Health Service Board to confer.

No final vote on the substance of the term changes was taken; the committee asked staff to post the revised calendar and return the item after outreach.
