Committee approves forwarding to Board an amendment to include textiles in sweat-free contracting

Chair David Campos introduced an ordinance to add textiles to San Francisco's existing sweat-free contracting ordinance so items such as sheets, linens, towels and blankets would be covered. Alicia Culver, chair of the San Francisco Sweat Free Procurement Advisory Group, said the group's review and the Workers Rights Consortium identified similar labor violations in textile manufacturing as in apparel and urged the committee to adopt the amendment.
Culver told the committee the Office of Labor Standards Enforcement research found other cities and public entities already include linens and textiles in their policies and noted that the Office of Contractor Administration may soon issue a bid solicitation "valued at approximately $500,000 for sheets, blankets, and other linens for Laguna Honda Hospital." She said the existing rating system the city uses could be applied to textiles without major changes.
Supervisor Daley moved the item recommending it be forwarded to the full Board; the committee took the motion without objection. The Board will consider the proposed amendment at a future meeting.
