The Rules Committee voted to forward the mayor’s appointment of Greg Chu to the full Board of Supervisors after a Sept. 17 presentation and public comment.
Greg Chu, who was sworn in to the Arts Commission on Sept. 1, told the committee that he wanted to champion the arts across neighborhoods and make programs more accessible. He cited decades of experience in design, multicultural advertising and nonprofit arts boards and discussed outreach and educational goals for underserved communities. "One of the goals is when all the people who make up the city will have really fair access," Chu said.
Multiple public speakers from the arts and civic sectors — including staff from the Arts Commission, arts educators and community advocates — testified in support of Chu’s appointment and noted his experience with community‑oriented programming and fundraising. Supervisors expressed appreciation for his background but several urged the mayor’s office to nominate more grassroots and struggling artists for future vacancies.
Supervisor Chris Daly moved to forward item 4 to the full Board with a committee report and to table the companion rejection motion. The committee approved the referral without objection and asked for continued attention to artist representation on future commissions.
The nomination will appear on the Board docket for final action.
