Rules Committee continues Maglev study resolution to allow further vetting with transportation agencies

The Rules Committee heard a resolution supporting an application for federal funding to evaluate Maglev (magnetic-levitation) train technology in San Francisco, but continued the item to allow additional vetting with transportation agencies.

Supervisor Alioto Pier introduced the resolution and said the measure seeks federal study dollars for Maglev projects. Consultant Wilson, who described his firm’s Maglev work, told the committee Maglev systems are in operation in parts of Asia and that the technology can be adapted to urban corridors. "We believe this could be the very first in The US," Wilson said, urging city support and a single voice from San Francisco to pursue federal earmarks.

Several supervisors asked for the Transportation Authority, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and city staff to review potential impacts and funding interactions before any formal support is recorded. "Frankly, before I could vote for this, I'd want to hear our transportation authority, our MTA, and probably our lobbyists in both Sacramento and Washington DC tell us this is not going to hurt any of our federal funding opportunities," a supervisor said.

Committee members agreed the item should begin public vetting in Rules but noted it will be presented again to allow coordination with the Transportation Authority and regional planners. The chair said the item would be continued to the call of the chair so staff and regional agencies can provide analyses.

Next steps: the resolution will be carried forward for additional analysis, including staff and Transportation Authority review, before the full Board takes a position.
