Rules Committee advances MTA appointments, Board of Appeals nominee and extends select committee

San Francisco — At the Feb. 14 Rules Committee meeting, the clerk read a series of administrative items and the committee advanced multiple appointments and a rules amendment.

The committee read and advanced Item 1, a motion confirming Bruce Otha to the Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors for a term ending March 1, 2012, and Item 2, confirming Malcolm Heinecke to the same board with the same term end. Both items were sent forward "without objection."

On Item 3 and Item 4, the committee considered Mayor's appointment of Tanya McVey Peterson to the Board of Appeals. Peterson introduced herself and outlined about 17 years of legal practice, including a federal clerkship and litigation work; several members of the public spoke in her support, citing her fairness and community work. Supervisor Bevan Dufty moved to advance Item 3 (approve appointment) and to table Item 4 (reject appointment); the committee advanced Item 3 for full Board consideration and tabled the rejection motion.

The committee also approved Item 5, a motion to amend Rule 5.7 of the Board's rules of order to extend the term of the Joint City and School District Select Committee for one year; Supervisor Dufty, who chairs that select committee, said he supported the extension.

All administrative items were handled in committee; the Board will consider confirmed appointments and the advancement of the Board of Appeals nominee in due course.
