MTA nominee Malcolm Heinecke presents vision for transit; committee agrees to two‑week continuance

Malcolm Heinecke appeared before the committee as the mayor l nominee to the Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) Board (Item 3). He thanked the panel for the opportunity and laid out a broad ‘‘vision for transportation’’ that puts transit first and aims for a safe, reliable, integrated system. He spoke at length about his taxi commission experience and work on targeted solutions, saying his modem initiatives include ideas such as peak‑time taxi dispatch incentives rather than simply increasing medallions.

Heinecke also emphasized environmental and accessibility goals, noting the city—an lead on clean‑vehicle taxi technology. In his remarks he said, "I love this city, very much," and described riding Muni about once or twice a week with his family.

Public speakers offered both technical and endorsement remarks. Keith Saggers urged attention to sustainable mobility plans and pedestrian and bicycle planning. Howard Strassen of the Sierra Club said he wanted to hear more about how nominees use transit in daily life. Paul Gillespie, president of the Taxi Commission, endorsed Heinecke and highlighted his work on paratransit and clean taxis.

Following public comment and committee discussion, an unidentified committee member requested a two‑week continuance on Items 3, 4 and 5 to resolve outstanding issues and ongoing discussions; the chair read Items 4 and 5 (appointments of Jerry Lee and Bruce Oka) and the committee moved to continue those items to February. No final confirmation votes were recorded at the meeting.
