Rules Committee forwards multiple advisory appointments, including four Veterans Affairs Commission recommendations

The San Francisco City and County Rules Committee on an unspecified date moved to forward recommendations to the full Board of Supervisors for multiple advisory appointments, including four candidates for the Veterans Affairs Commission and several nominees to the Shelter Monitoring Committee, Foster Care Improvement Task Force and the Western SoMa Citizens Planning Task Force.
On Item 4, the committee heard seven applicants for four seats on the Veterans Affairs Commission. Applicants and supporters described service records and proposals for the commission. Bud Wilson, a reapplicant and recent commission president, outlined work over the past four years including websites and mission materials; Edwin Wilkerson and Larry Dean Smith described military service and post-service expertise; Reggie Baldonado urged outreach to veterans who are not computer literate and proposed a veterans bulletin for the city. Wallace Levin, vice president of the Veterans Affairs Commission, told the committee the commission has twice passed resolutions opposing “don’t ask, don’t tell” and urged support for Jill Buck, a woman candidate the commission flagged to maintain gender representation. After discussion about representation and candidate merits, Chair Tom Ammiano said he would forward Bud Wilson, Jill Buck, Reggie Baldonado and Edwin Wilkerson to the full board; a committee member raised no objection.
Public commenter Roy Riccio, who identified himself as a sheriff’s department employee and Filipino community advocate, urged the committee to appoint Baldonado to bring diversity and to press the Veterans Affairs Committee to back federal HR legislation to support veterans’ equity.
On Item 5, the committee considered candidates for one seat on the Shelter Monitoring Committee. Diana Greer said she had been attending shelter-monitoring meetings and was familiar with committee responsibilities; the chair moved to forward her recommendation but requested Greer obtain a letter from the nominating nonprofit and deliver it to Clerk Gail Johnson before the Board vote next Tuesday.
For the Foster Care Improvement Task Force (Item 6), the committee was notified that the single applicant, Ms. Heinemann, could not attend; the committee said it had sufficient notice and favored expediting the appointment.
On Item 7, the committee considered five applicants for three seats on the Western SoMa Citizens Planning Task Force. Candidates included Luke Lightening, John Rosenbaum and Catherine Ann Swinford. After discussing residency and seat criteria, the committee moved to forward three candidates to the Board, with Chair Ammiano indicating he would include Swinford in the current round and encouraging Rosenbaum to remain under consideration for future openings.
