Committee forwards tax-collection resolution to secure hospital debt with lien authority

The Rules Committee voted to forward a resolution authorizing the Treasurer/Tax Collector to pursue collection actions related to unpaid hospital fees at San Francisco General Hospital.
David Augustine, policy and legislative manager in the Treasurer’s office, said the resolution would allow the office to attach a lien to rental property held jointly by the debtor and his wife to secure payment for hospital services provided between May 2005 and April 2006. Augustine said the lien would not force sale of a residence but would secure the city’s interest until the property was sold.
No public opposition appeared; the committee moved the resolution forward with recommendation to the full board.
