High school briefly evacuated after oil odor; PSAT, pre-ACT to be rescheduled

Unidentified speaker told the board that an oil odor in a high school space required a prompt evacuation this morning and commended students and staff for leaving the building calmly and quickly. "It was calm. It was orderly. It was efficient," the speaker said.
The speaker said custodial staff "was able to shut off the boiler and clean up the space," but also stated on the record that "the boiler wasn't even running." Emergency responders who remained on scene included school resource officer Terry Drain, fire inspector Kenny Gordon, Orangetown Police and Orangetown Fire Departments and South Orangetown Ambulance Corps. No injuries were reported.
Because a scheduled PSAT and a pre-ACT were taking place at the time of the evacuation, the district said the high school will share next steps with students and families about rescheduling those exams. The board did not take further action during the meeting and said families will receive direct communication about new exam dates and procedures.
