Tappan Zee girls cross country honored after first state title in school history

The South Orangetown Central School District used its superintendent's report Tuesday to honor members of the Tappan Zee High School girls cross country team after the squad won the school's first state title in any sport.
Superintendent Dr. Culott announced the team and coaches Pat Driscoll and Matt Borowski were being welcomed back from their meet and were recognized by local first responders upon return. Athletic Director Bill Pilla thanked the administration and board, described the team's collaborative coaching model and emotional reaction to the title, and introduced assistant coaches and student athletes by name. Pilla said the district will display the state championship banner at halftime during a winter contest and will take team photos.
Pilla and staff noted the program's strength is continuity and mentorship between older and younger athletes; Pilla also announced that Cassidy Donovan will attend the University of Delaware on a cross-country and track athletic scholarship. The board delayed part of its agenda so members could attend upcoming community celebrations including the holiday parade on Dec. 14 and a town board recognition on Dec. 17.
